Axiom

Axiom Microdevices Inc. is a supplier of Power Amplifiers and other RF semiconductor devices for the worldwide mobile handset market. The company’s patented technology enables conventional CMOS to be used to realize Watt level RF power amplifiers without the requirement for a module package. This technology provides unique benefits to our customers in terms of reduced design complexity and bill of materials. Use of a standard high volume CMOS process and a simple leadframe package also ensures security of supply. Axiom Microdevices has its headquarters in Irvine, Calif., with sales representation also in the United Kingdom, China, Taiwan and South Korea.  Axiom has been shipping high volume production of its AX502 device since the beginning of 2007 to customers in Europe and Asia.

The AX502 CMOS PA integrates full quad-band GSM/GPRS PA function on a single integrated circuit (IC), using mainstream silicon CMOS process technology. Multiple handsets containing Axiom Microdevices’ CMOS PA are shipping into both Europe and Asia. The AX502 not only brings handset manufacturers the obvious advantages of mainstream CMOS, it also brings better long-term solutions by removing the need for specialty process technologies in the last “non-CMOS” circuit block of the phone, thereby enabling more natural, more optimized integration options.

Axiom Microdevices’ patented technology, deployed in the AX502 CMOS PA, allows the use of standard silicon CMOS process technology to integrate all of the functions of the PA including its input and output match. The core technology is a structure known as a distributed active transformer (DAT). The DAT realizes a high power amplifier stage together with power combination and impedance transformation to 50Ω in one elegant topology. DAT and further circuit techniques and innovations solve the key problems of large signal RF without the need for a gallium arsenide (GaAs) process or a multichip module package.
