As one of China’s leading mobile handset manufacturers, Ginwave is leveraging the AX502 CMOS PA in multiple handset designs, and has shipped millions of units
IRVINE, Calif., June 2, 2008— Axiom Microdevices, Inc. announced today that Ginwave Technologies, a leading mobile handset designer and manufacturer located in China, is shipping the AX502 quad-band GPRS CMOS PA in its cellular handsets. “Axiom has achieved the impossible with their shipment of the world’s first, and only fully-integrated CMOS PA for GSM mobile phones, and it is anticipated that this disruptive technology will bring tremendous value to the mobile phone market,” said Dr. Roland Zhou, vice president Ginwave Technologies. “Ginwave is currently using Axiom’s AX502 CMOS PA in several phone models that have already shipped in the millions of units. As we expected, the reliability of Axiom’s CMOS PA has proven superior to that of GaAs PAs. We are also very pleased with the price and secure supply enabled by Axiom’s CMOS PA and consider them to be a long term partner for Ginwave.” Axiom Microdevices’ quad-band GPRS CMOS PA, designated the AX502, is based on Axiom’s patented Distributed Active Transformer (DAT) technology which allows the use of 0.13-micrometer silicon CMOS process technology to integrate all of the functions between transmitter output and transmit/receive switch. Axiom Microdevices realizes power gain stages, small signal control circuitry and 50-ohm matching on a single die, achieving what was previously only viable with devices manufactured in proprietary gallium arsenide (GaAs) process technology and assembled in complex multi-chip module packaging.
According to market research firm Gartner, revenue from handset semiconductors expected to reach $59.5 billion by 2012, up from $44 billion in 2007.1 “Cellular phones are one of the world’s largest consumers of semiconductor products due to continued growth in consumer demand for feature-rich, yet cost effective handsets,” said Stan Bruederle, Research Vice President, Gartner. “The inherent benefits afforded by CMOS when it comes to cost, reliability, power and a smaller footprint, make it an attractive choice for handset manufacturers looking to achieve higher levels of integration while lowering overall bill-of-materials.”
