AXIOM MICRODEVICES INTRODUCES WORLD’S FIRST FULLY INTEGRATED CMOS QUAD-BAND GSM/GPRS POWER AMPLIFIER

ORANGE, Calif., Feb. 6, 2004 — Axiom Microdevices Inc. today secured its position as provider of the world’s first fully integrated complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) power amplifier (PA) with the introduction of the AX501 device. This flagship product from Axiom integrates a full quad-band GSM/GPRS power amplifier function for application in any dual-, triple- or quad-band GSM/GPRS cellular handset or data module.

“With today’s introduction, we are initiating our mission of becoming the leading vendor of integrated radio solutions in the cellular market by profitably enabling new economies of scale through architectural breakthroughs,” said Antoine Paquin, chief executive officer. “Axiom’s patented technology integrates both input and output matching circuits, offering the handset designer an easy, zero-component interface to transceiver and transmit-receive switch module.”

According to Ray Sharma, wireless technology analyst with GMP Capital Corp., Axiom has created an industry first with the introduction of the AX501 and overcome significant engineering obstacles.

"Axiom has solved the CMOS PA challenge and created a vibrant future for cellular handset makers,” Sharma explained. “Its introduction today will open the doors to full RF integration and ensure new economic benefits will be derived for the industry.

"While others in the industry have said it is an impossible task to deliver CMOS PAs, Axiom has quietly yet clearly demonstrated that there is an elegant solution that holds the potential to redefine the economics of handsets," Sharma said.

The AX501 amplifies low-level radio frequency (RF) signals to the required high-power levels needed for transmission in GSM/GPRS mobile phone handsets or data modules. The device consists of two independent power amplifiers for use in the low bands 824-849MHz/E-GSM (880-915MHz) and high bands, DCS (1710-1785MHz)/PCS (1850-1910MHz). All of the functions between the transmitter output and the transmit/receive switch module are integrated. The power amplifier core includes 50-ohm input and output matching circuitry, enabling direct connection to the transceiver output and the transmit/receive switch input without the use of external components. The power level may be set via a fully integrated closedloop power controller, eliminating the need for external couplers, detectors and error amplifiers. The control loop structure assures that the GSM power/time mask may be met with adequate margin to allow robust mass production. In addition, the device guarantees reliability through the use of built-in protection circuits for over-voltage, over-temperature and over-current events.

Pricing and Availability
Samples of the AX501 are available now for lead customers. It is priced at $1.50 per
